KOTA KINABALU:
The merger of Kimanis, Bongawan and Membakut sub-districts into a full
district is expected to materialise by the middle of next year. According
to Foreign Minister cum Kimanis member of parliament Datuk Anifah Aman,
a proposal had been submitted to the State Government for consideration
two years ago. The three sub-districts with a combined population of about 64,000, has fulfilled one criteria to become a full district.
A
new district is expected to be created in the west coast soon involving
the merger of Kimanis, Bongawan and Membakut sub-districts for upgrade
to become a full district. This move will cause the jurisdictional
area of the Papar District Council to shrink as Kimanis and Bongawan
are currently its sub-districts. The same will happen to the Beaufort District Council since Membakut is its sub-district. Anifah told reporters this after presenting 500 registered fishermen with assistance from the government recently.
“The
setting up of Petronas’s Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal in Kimanis means
that we are almost there in fulfilling all the criteria needed to create
a full district, and we expect the creation of a full district to
happen by the middle of next year,” he said. Among the benefits of having a full district, according to Anifah, is better administration of the three sub-districts.
